Dispatches from the Congo: Italian ambassador assassinated

On February 22, Italian ambassador Luca Attanasio was killed in the North Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Italian paramilitary officer Vittorio Iacovacci, who was travelling with the ambassador, and their Congolese driver Moustapha Milambo were also killed in this attack. The murder of a foreign diplomat has drawn international attention to the turmoil in the DRC. However, the region regularly witnesses such incidents in which Congolese people lose their lives. Kambale Musavuli from the Centre for Research on the Congo talks about why the killings don’t stop in the DRC.

Fight for $15 is a struggle for dignity and equality

Eric Winston, a restaurant worker and a leader with NC Raise Up, the North Carolina branch of Fight for $15 and a Union discusses the bill tabled by the Joe Biden administration which includes the promise of a minimum wage of 15 dollars per hour by 2025. The $15 an hour minimum age is, for Eric, about guaranteeing people basic means for their survival. The workers want the bill to be passed with immediate effect, but as Winston highlights, it is just one step in a long struggle for rights, dignity, and equality. Workers in the campaign who are largely from the fast food sector and not formally unionized, are also fighting for the right to unionize.
