On August 19, 1945, as part of the August Revolution or the August General Uprising in Vietnam the Viet Minh forces took over capital city of Hanoi. The uprising was started by Việt Minh (League for the Independence of Vietnam) under the leadership of Ho Chi Minh against French colonial rule in Vietnam. Within two weeks, Viet Minh forces liberated most of the villages and rural cities across the north and central Vietnam. On September 2, 1945, Ho Chi Minh declared Vietnamese Independence.
