Following the abortive coup of September 30, 1965, under the leadership of Gen. Suharto, Indonesian Army and various death squads — facilitated and encouraged by the United States and other Western governments — initiated a massacre of Communist Party of Indonesia (PKI) members, Communist sympathizers, ethnic Abangan Javanese, ethnic Chinese and alleged leftists. The purge began in the month of October. The most widely published estimates were that 500,000 to more than one million people were killed in that campaign with some more recent estimates going as high as two to three million.
