On July 24, Hungarian journalists, along with progressive citizens, took to the streets condemning the attack on press freedom. The protests followed the firing of the editor-in-chief of the news portal, Index.hu, after he warned of loss of autonomy of the organization. Earlier, a businessman allied to PM Viktor Orban had gained control over its funding.

Hungary is ranked the second-worst in the EU with regard to freedom of press by Reporters Without Borders. There have been a number of previous instances of pro-Orban forces and individuals gaining control over media outlets critical of the government.
