Hungary is ranked the second-worst in the EU with regard to freedom of press by Reporters Without Borders. There have been a number of previous instances of pro-Orban forces and individuals gaining control over media outlets critical of the government.

Protests took place in Budapest after the editor-in-chief of the news portal Index.hu was fired. Many journalists resigned in the aftermath. A businessman close to PM Viktor Orban had earlier gained a stake in the portal
