Anti-Tía María mine protesters emerge victorious in Peru

Since July 15, thousands of farmers and inhabitants of the Tambo Valley in the Arequipa region of Peru have been mobilizing against the government’s decision to authorize the construction of the long-resisted Tía María mining project.

After more than a week of protests against Southern Copper Corporation and the right-wing government of Peru, President Martin Vizcarra agreed to the protesters’ demand to reconsider his government’s recent approval for the proposed $1.4 billion, 120,000-tonnes-per-year copper project.
