Mexican farmers embark on national strike

The strike was organized on the 140th birth anniversary of the Mexican revolutionary leader Emiliano Zapata.

Hundreds of thousands of Mexican farmers across the country joined the national strike on August 8, demanding an increased budget for the agricultural sector, transparency in the allocation of resources, land development policies and timely dispersal of fertilizers. The strike was organized on the 140th birth anniversary of the Mexican revolutionary leader Emiliano Zapata. Zapata, was the leading figure of the peasant army which helped overthrow the dictator Porfirio Diaz in the 1910 Mexican revolution.
