Assassination of MK Gandhi

On January 30, 1948, leader of India’s freedom movement;  M.K Gandhi (famously known as Mahatma Gandhi) was assassinated in the compound of Birla House (now Gandhi Smriti) in New Delhi. Since then, January 30th has been observed as Martyr’s Day in India. His assassin was Nathuram Vinayak Godse, belonging to a far-right Hindu organization, Hindu Mahasabha. Along with Godse, eight other people were accused and arrested for the murder and conspiracy. The trial began on May, 27, 1948 and the court found all of the defendants except one guilty as charged. Eight men were convicted for the murder conspiracy, and for the violation of the Explosive Substances Act. Nathuram Godse and Narayan Apte were sentenced to death by hanging and the remaining six were sentenced to life imprisonment.
