The World Food Program has warned that 8.7 million people are nearing famine-like conditions. 3.2 million children and 700,000 pregnant and lactating women are facing acute malnutrition. After repeated appeals, the UN Security Council approved a resolution to provide humanitarian aid to Afghanistan on December 22.
