The end of May marked two years since the murder of George Floyd in 2020 by police officer Derek Chauvin in the United States. Despite a mass movement demanding an end to police brutality and systemic racism following his murder, there was no reduction in police killings in the US from 2020 to 2021, and according to reports the police killed 1,145 people in 2021, 12 more than in 2020, and 16 more Black people specifically.
