46 years of Carnation Revolution

The Carnation Revolution marks an important milestone in Portuguese political history and in the history of the modern world as it not only brought down the authoritarian Estado Novo regime in Portugal, but also paved the way to the independence of many Portuguese colonies in Africa. The revolution began as a coup organized by a section of army officers, the Armed Forces Movement (MFA), in Lisbon, but swiftly received mass support and was supported by popular participation on the streets. It unfolded as a nonviolent revolution that ultimately deposed the regime on April 25, 1974. That day, civilians greeted the revolutionary ‘rebel’ soldiers in the peaceful resistance with carnations. The revolution was thus memorialized as the Carnation Revolution and is celebrated every year on April 25 as the Freedom Day in Portugal and is a national holiday.

The Estado Novo regime was a conservative authoritarian junta that came to power in 1933 following the coup against the democratic First Republic in Portugal. The Estado Novo regime’s 41-year-rule was notorious for the repression of civil liberties and political freedoms. The regime also violently repressed independence movements in various Portuguese colonies. Its fall brought an end to the colonial war led by the Portuguese army in the colonies and saw the liberation of countries like Angola and Mozambique.

Dock workers' strike

On February 13, 1951, New Zealand witnessed the largest industrial action in its history, when waterfront workers (dockworkers) went on a strike against financial hardships and poor working conditions. They also demanded same 15% pay increase that all industrial workers had been awarded by the Arbitration Court in January 1951. The National government, led by Sidney Holland, in an attempt to break the strike, implemented harsh measures including censoring the press from reporting on the strike and making it illegal to provide food and money to the striking workers and their families. The strike, which lasted for 151 days received widespread support from working class across New Zealand and thousands more joined the strike in solidarity.

Yugoslav partisan Lepa Radić executed by Nazis

On February 8, 1943, Bosnian member of Yugoslav partisans, Lepa Svetozara Radić was executed at the age of 17 by the Nazis during World War II. She was part of the 7th partisan company of the 2nd Krajiški Detachment, and took part in Kozara Offensive and Battle of Neretva before she was captured by the Nazis. After failing to extract any information from her about the partisans, she was sentenced to death by hanging.

With the noose around her neck, she cried out: “Long live the Communist Party, and partisans! Fight, people, for your freedom! Do not surrender to the evildoers! I will be killed, but there are those who will avenge me!” Nazi troops offered her a way out of the gallows by revealing her comrades’ and leaders’ identities. She responded that she was not a traitor and that they would reveal themselves when they avenged her death.

She was posthumously awarded the Order of the People’s Hero on 20 December 1951, for her role in the resistance movement against the Axis powers—becoming the youngest recipient at the time.

Viva Sao Sepé!
On February 7, 1756, Guarani leader Sepé Tiaraju died in combat while resisting the Spanish and Portuguese colonial invaders in the municipality of São Gabriel, in the present-day state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. In that conquest, thousands of Guaranis lost their territory and the majority of the population had to flee to the other side of the Uruguay River, which is now the province of Misiones in Argentina and Paraguay, whose population to this day is mostly Guarani.
