With more than 5000 cases, the recent monkeypox outbreak in Europe and North America has become a concern for many. As long as monkeypox was confined to Africa, where outbreaks have occurred for years, it raised little concern. We try to understand this phenomenon as well as explain the origins and the nature of the disease as well as ways to curb its spread.
Why is monkeypox in the news?
From 1970 onwards, sporadic monkeypox outbreaks have occurred in Central and West Africa which have been constantly ignored by Western countries as well as mainstream media.
