Guardian Council

The June 28 elections were called following the death of the incumbent president Ebrahim Raisi along with seven others in a helicopter crash last month.

Ebrahim Raisi won 61.95% of the votes cast in the elections held on Friday. The voter turnout was around 49%

The Guardian Council headed by supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei approved a list of seven candidates out of a total of 592 applicants. Most of the approved candidates belong to conservative groups

The elections to the Majlis that are scheduled for February 21 are taking place at a time of intense diplomatic and political aggression by the US. This has strengthened the conservative sections in the country
