The anti-government demonstrations erupted following the death of a young man who had been injured and severely beaten by the Tunisian police in late November.

Among the main demands of the prisoners is the right to receive specialized medical treatment from their personal doctors instead of those sent by the prison administration

The leftist party also expelled PA labor minister Nasri Abu Jaish from its membership after he refused to resign from the government despite the party’s decision 

The Tunisian League of Human Rights (LTDH) in a statement condemned the violence unleashed by the security forces. They accused the government of prime minister Hichem Mechichi of trying to “silence the voices of protest.”

The decision came days after the death of writer Mushtaq Ahmed who was also detained under the Digital Security Act. Protests have broken out across Bangladesh demanding the withdrawal of the law

26-year-old Islam Al-Ostraly was arrested after an an argument with a police officer last week. While the police claim that he fell ill in prison and died of a ‘circulatory attack, signs of extreme torture were reportedly found on his body
